Audition Information

Kingsford production team held auditions for our short film ‘Lesson Learnt’ on Friday they 11th of December at 11:00am. To advertise our auditions we put up posters with all the details on around the school, we also went around to certain form groups to tell the students about the auditions and what they would involve. Our auditions had a good turn out and we managed to cast our entire film in one audition process. This is who we have cast to be in our film:

Douglas – Keegan Featherstone

Fuchsia – Emmaline Gordon

Dead Body #1- Alex Cockburn

News Reporter #1- Glynn Harries

News Reporter #2- Gemma Peacock

We cast Keegan Featherstone as the antagonist in our film as he fitted all the criteria of what we thought the killer should be, he has the right type of look, from his dark scruffy hair to his powerful build. Also Keegan is a brilliant actor, especially when it comes to being the villian in a piece, so as a group we was pleased that we was able to get Keegan to star in our film.
As a team we are really pleased with who we have cast, we feel that we have all the characters we need and who we have cast meets our character description well. Within the opening of the film that we are filming there is not much speech as we feel it adds to the suspense and horror of the piece. Therefore when casting our film we had the actors improvise what they thought there character would say. We also asked certain characters to pretend to be dead etc. in order to get into there role. However News Reporter #1 and #2 both read this section from our script:

Reporter 1: Today we are here at Chelmer Valley High School, where a number of past students from the leaving class of 1995 have been reported missing.

Reporter 2: Police have been working long and hard to try and find any connection between all the disappearances, and all they can find is that all these people where in the same leaving year group here at Chelmer Valley in 1995.

Reporter 1: The police will continue their search to find links to the disappearances, if anybody has any information please contact the number at the bottom of the screen

As a whole we are really pleased with how our auditions went and we are happy with whom we have cast to be in out short film. We have made sure that everyone that we have cast in our film is over the age of sixteen for legal reasons. The purpose of the auditons was to find suitable actors to play the parts in the opening of our horror film, whether it be a dead body or the antagonist himself we was on the look out for a certain type of actor for each part, and due to the excellent audition we held, that went by without a hitch we was able to get all the good quality actors that we needed to star in our film.

Audition Schedule

KingsFord Production team held auditons on Friday the 11th of December at 11:00am. We used one of our school drama studios as the location of our audtions. We chose the time and place we did to make the auditions open to a wider range of people, and the location meant that the actors where in a environment they were comfortable with and this meant that the actors did not let there anxiety interfere with their performance.

Location Scouting

Our group came up with ideas on where we would like to film our horror movie to make it as effective as possible. We decided that we will film in multiple locations, so that we make the audience think about where these locations are and if the killings involved are linked. We decided to have our antagonist’s workplace as a car bodyworks garage which is located in Great Leighs. We have chosen this because it can be a quiet place where no-one knows the goings on inside. There is a large supply of murder weapons and tools of his trade. We could film this at any time during the day, as it will not matter whether our light source is natural or not. However filming at night will personify our antagonist’s personality, as he is a dark character who is aiming to kill. We also think that the garage is a good location to choose because it is a dark and scary place which is synonymous with the horror genre.

We will also film outside a pub because our antagonist meets one of his victims and we film them both leaving the pub and getting into his van. The pub we will be filming at will be located in Broomfield .This shows the innocence of the victim as she doesn’t know what is going to happen to her. This also makes our antagonist more vulnerable because he is seen in public, but at this time in the film no-one suspects him to be the killer. We will film outside the pub at dusk, so we have some natural light, but also it shows the end of a meeting in any normal circumstances, which is making our short film all the more realistic. This location is an important part of the film because it shows our antagonist in public and also makes the audience question what is going to happen to the woman that he leaves the pub with.

We will be filming our news report outside the front of Chelmer valley high school. This will be because in our film all the murders are linked, they are only linked because the people that have died all where in the leaving class of 1995. This shows that all the victims come from here as the background of the school symbolises it. We will be filming this during the day as will we try to make the report as realistic as possible. So we will probably film the news report during one of our media lessons. The news report will be the ending of our opening of the film; we have chosen to do this because it leaves the audience with a sense of suspense about what is going to happen next, if we were to make the entire film.

We will also be filming in a woodland area which will be in St. Andrews park which is located in Newland Spring. We have decided to choose this location as a scene for or first murder. The Kingsford production team has decided that the woods is a good place for the victims body to be because it is dark, scary and it gives the audience a sense of fear, because the image of the corpse will be hard hitting. We will film the killer’s feet walking away from the victim through dead leaves, which connotes more death and destruction, showing that the antagonist is killing everything in its path. This will also be filmed at dusk to show the transfer from light to dark, just like the killers personality.

Character Profile's and Costumes

Dead Body #1

Our film consists of two dead bodies, the first dead body is a male character that has been murdered and deserted in woods, and there will be fake blood to connote death. The male character will be someone from the yearbook that will be later crossed of by the main character ‘Douglas’, the victim will be around the age of 25-27 depending on the year group. We are going to use our own fake blood and use it on our dead bodies, to keep it realistic. This dead body will not have a name and will be on anonymous. We want our character to be dressed in pale colour to connote innocence, he will look fresh faced and young to also connote his vulnerability within the film.

Fuchsia

Fuchsia will be the second character that is a shown as the killers next victim, she will be shown half way through our film walking our of the pub with ‘Douglas’ there is a part in the scene where the killer speak to ‘Fuchsia’ saying ‘allow me to give you a lift, my van is round the back’ . The next shot shows the killer putting black bin bags into his van, indicating this is her body. We then see a photograph of Fuchsia later in the yearbook when the killer crosses her our with a red marker, she will have to look similar to the photograph to show that she was in the same year. Fuchsia will be wearing a white jumper and jeans with light coloured shoes; they will be light and bright to connote innocence, and vulnerability. She also has blonde hair which will also connote innocence. The woman character will be around the age of 25-27 also, to show that she was in the same year group at the antagonist as one of his peers.

News Reporters Character Profile and Costumes

The news reporters will be used within the last 30 seconds of our film, to mark the ending of the opening sequence and leave the audience on a cliff-hanger. We want to leave the ending open to make our film different and inspirational; we have used our inspiration from the film 'Saw' which leaves every one of their films as a cliff-hanger, so that there can be another film. Also, to create a lasting image in the audience's imagination, we want to leave our film as a cliff-hanger because we can then develop our story furher for the antagonist and his peers. It also acts as a narrative hook which draws the audience in and persuades them to keep watching.

There will be a male and a female character reading the news in smart clothing. They will be male and female because most news round updates consist of this on the television, which gives our audience a sense of normality and security in comparison to our main character ‘Douglas’ who connotes death and presents a great depth of fear.

We have also drawn inspiration from ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ which also uses news clippings and reports,in the set-up, to imply that it is based upon a true story, which makes it seem more realistic and therefore more likely to happen in real life. We want to make our film as realistic as possible so that it is believable and the audience experience genuine feelings of fear, we are going to relate to our inspirations as much as possible.

The male character will be dressed in suit trousers and a suit jacket with a shirt, to look smart and well mannered, he will be around the age of 40, and we want our male character to look around the age of 40 and be dressed smart because we want to make our film as realistic as possible and to do this we need to stick to typical conventions and what our target audience would think of in reference to news reporters in the media to date. The woman character will also be dressed in smart clothes, consisting of a suit skirt and jacket with a shirt underneath, she will be around the age of 35-40 also, to make this more realistic. We want them to be around the same age to show that they know each other well and are experienced news readers. The voices of the news readers should be with an accent of 'recieved pronunciation' (RP). The news readers are the only people who are not affected by the killer, which will also connote normality.

Main Character Profile & Costumes

The main character in our film will be the antagonist; the antagonist will be a male and his face will not be seen during the film other than in his school yearbook this is to make him anonymous therfore making him more feared to the audience. However there will be glimpses of the killer, showing him from far away or just his feet etc, we have decided to do this because it adds to the drama and suspense of the film and makes the audience more interested in finding out who the killer is. The antagonist will be aged around 26 years old and will be scruffy and uncouth, he will be like any normal twenty something male which makes him unassuming as the killer. The killer works in a garage so he wears heavy black boots and dark overalls and this a very normal due to his job description. The killer will have dark hair and rather pale skin we have chosen our character to have this image as the pale skin connotes death and is very ghostly, also the dark hair connotes darkness and the evilness of the killer. This type of person as a killer is often used in horror films, so this part of our film is a common horror convention.

These are the type of boots that the Antagonist will wear as we think that they are quite scary and harsh looking. In one part of out film all you see is the killer’s feet walking away and we think that this type of boot will add to the horror and suspense of the piece, also the boots will be balck because it is a harsh colour that connotes death. The tough boots of the killer also show the power that he has over his victims, making the victims seem even more powerless.

We have decided to name the main character Douglas and this is because we think it is quite an innocent and child like name which is not synonymous with murderers so with this we are going against normal horror conventions. We have gathered inspiration from horror films such as Saw and Jeepers Creepers where the antagonist is never really fully shown to the audience because it adds to the suspense and horror of the film. In Saw a mask is used and we may well use a mask in our film as it keeps the killers identity a secret, and we think that the fear of the un-known is one of the scariest things in the horror genre. We are also going to use fake blood in our piece, which is also done in Saw; the blood will denote the death of the victims, and it will show the pain that the angonist inflicted on his victims. On the killers clothing there will also be small blood marks which connotes pain, a struggle and obviously death. The antagonist in the film's face will not be seen until the very end of the peice and even then it will be covered by a large mask which would be used when using a blow torch in the garage. We have decided to use this mask because of the occupation of the killer and also because it furthers add to the suspense of the film, as the audience are unaware of the killers identity. This will happen in the garage when the killer is seen watching the news report about the murders on television, this will be the last shot or the opening of the film that we are creating because it will imprint the image into the audiences minds.

The idea for using the mask in the film to hide the killers identity was drawn from the film Saw as we feel it makes the film more dominate in the horror genre. As a group however we decided to adapt the type of mask to fit our killer and his job description, therefore using both our inspiration and imagination in order to make the opening of the film the best it can be.

This is a picture of Keegan Featherstone (above), he is the actor we have chosen to be the antagonist in our opening of a horror film. We have chosen Keegan as we think he meets all the correct critea for our piece, his dark matted hair and strong features mean he meets all the conventions when it comes to the antagonist in a horror film.
On the left there is a picture of the costumes that the antagonist will be wearing in our film 'Lesson Learnt' we chose these overalls as they are dark coloured and stained, and they connote darkenss and power within the killer. The overalls also had a white hooded overall underneath and this is showing that maybe the killer is not all bad. I think that the used of the overalls worked vey well in our film as it also showed the profession of the antagonist (working in a garage).

Update

Our group have recently been working on an audtion poster for over 16's to audition for our final film. We have also been working on concent forms so that each actor has parental concent for taking part. We are going to film the auditionese so that we can play them back and decide as a group who we think has the most potential to film well in our production. Creating the poster will atrract more diverse people so that we have a range to choose from after audtioning them.

Target Audience Profile

The film that we are making is a horror and will be politically aimed at British people. Our film will be able to be seen at all A, B, C1, C2, D and E class groups but our film is mainly aimed at B, C1, C2 and D class groups. These groups intended for are the middle classed, unemployed group of people around which is around teen-young adult; 15-25. The reason for this is because of the modern era being based around gore and violence which is the most popular out of the sub genres. Our film is going to be aimed at mainly males as both our protagonist and antagonists are going to be males. Reason for this is because for the film we are making using a male is more likely to be realistic in wanting revenge for the bullying in the past.

For the age certificate being 15, this allows the film to be aimed at teens-young adults as a 15 certificated film can contain the same depth of an 18 film but in slightly lesser detail; minimizing the swearing and the amount of violence in the film but still having enough for the realism of horror to be in effect. Also, certificating the film a 15 allows the audience of the film to be aimed at a wider range of people. More and more people are starting to play electronic games like the Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and standard computers and are ranged around the class group we decided to set for our film and involved in the gaming are horror, action, gore, violence etc… which are all included in our film so is ideal to set our film around these as they are the most popular at the moment. Also, from a questionnaire we made, the majority said that they would prefer the rating of the horror film to be 15.

Making our film a 15 is ideal because included in our film will be moments of swearing but not very often. Using swearing in various parts of the film allows getting across to the audience the full impact of the scenario set for character. For example, if a character is in a dark room and didn’t know how he got there he/she would not say where am I, how I got here, they would be emphasizing there emotions as much as possible because they are scared and frightened as they do not know what is going to happen next. So using swearing in parts of the film will allow the characters to illustrate there emotions to the audience and add the tension to the audience as if they are in that position. A film that demonstrates this is Saw 1, as in the opening couple of minutes of the film the two protagonists are in a pitch black room and one of the characters says swear words to emphasize his emotions and being in a dark room the audience cannot see his expressions so him using the swear words tells the audience how he is feeling. Also, some parts of the film when the killings are present, they either have already happened like the opening of the film or are happening off camera so this takes away some of the gore and violence from the film but using this technique can also make the audience just as scared because the actions the antagonist is performing on the character could mean that it is too disgusting to show on camera. A film that demonstrates this is Halloween when the antagonist kills one of his victims with a scythe but instead of seeing him kill the victim all you see is blood splatter across the barn. However, in the other parts of the murders, they will be showed on the camera to help set the certificated rating and add the suspense and tension to the audience so they will get scared.

In our questionnaire we made, we first asked the question if they liked horror films. Most of the people we asked said they liked horror films but two people (both female) said they didn’t and one was 50/50 (male) as he likes some types of horrors and doesn’t like others. We then asked what it they didn’t like about them. One of them said that they didn’t like gore in films and the other said that the writers were twisted and what they come up with, some things have gone too far.

Types of media works our audience consumes are soaps like Hollyoaks which are based on real events that have happened or can happen so this allows it to compare itself to the audience. Having said this so does our film with either films they enjoy watching like Saw or Halloween or games that they play on there console as they can relate the type of genre or the components involved in the media to what is going to be in our film, gore violence, horror.
From the questionnaire, One of the questions we asked was what other genres do they enjoy watching. We asked five females and five males and all five females said they enjoyed watching comedy films and two out of the five said they enjoyed watching Rom-Coms. Furthermore, all five of the males said they enjoyed watching comedy also and three out of the five said they enjoyed watching action films as well. From the information gathered, we found out that comedy was the other favourite genre our audience likes watching; we can include a bit of comedy in our film, but as it’s a horror- gore and violence, it would not fit in well. Although from the other two popular genres that were said; action and Rom-Com we could add a bit of both in as throughout the film, action at some point will be a slight role in our film as its admissible and maybe we could include Rom-Com as the Protagonist could save an opposite sex character.

From the questionnaire, one of the questions we asked was what there favourite horror film was. The feedback was very good for our target audience profile as every single answer that was given by both boys and girls were completely different. Although, the films that they said were there favourite links in with each other as the majority of the films are similar to what we are going to make so this helps us a lot as it tells us that we are on the same lines of our audience and is making the appropriate film.
Also, we asked what they prefer in a horror film. The five female audience members were about 50/50 with the answers we got from them. Two out of five said that they would prefer the film to be based on a psychological thriller, Two out of five said they would prefer the film to be based on scary and the other said they would prefer the film to be based on comedy. Whereas, two out of the five males said they would prefer the film to be based on gore, one said comedy, another said scary and another said other. From these results overall were a success as our film will contain gore and will be scary.
Moreover, we asked what they like about horror films. On the female side of the questionnaire, Three out of five said they like paranormal activities in films and the rest said they like spoofs in horror films. On the male side of the questionnaire, two out of the five said they liked monsters (i.e. zombies), one said they liked spoofs, another said they liked paranormal activities and the other said they liked mass murders. Although we are not making a paranormal activity film, spoof film or monster film which was what the majority of the audience likes I believe that this was not so important in our research as mass murder was selected; being one out of the ten, means that that sort of activity in a film is still liked and I believe will still be popular.
In a horror film our target audience said what they would expect to see in one. Three out of the five males said that they would expect to see blood in a horror film and the other two said they would expect to see death in a horror film. Two of the females said that they would expect killing/death in a horror film, another said an innocent victim, another said twists in the story line to make the audience think and the other said scariness; something to make the audience react to what is happening. From this information gathered, the majority thought killing, death, blood was the most expected to be in a horror film and that is what we are containing in ours so I believe we made the right decision.

To advertise our film, we believe that we would use the TV as nowadays most people have at least one TV in there home so a lot of people would be able to see it. As well as TV, we would use websites like facebook, Bebo, MySpace etc…. as most people these days use social networking sites so our film will be able to be advertised globally interesting more people.

To advertise my film trailer in the cinema, I would screen it in films that are similar to our film and that are the same genre; being horror like Saw, Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Halloween. Screening our film’s trailer in films similar to ours allows the audience that is interested in that type of film to want to see our film as well as its like the film they are about to watch.

Overall, our film is aimed at young teens-adults with the certificate of 15. This is because we believe the younger generation prefer to watch horror films than the older so basing it at 15 allows us to include enough depth in a typical horror film for the audience to enjoy a good scare including gore and violence and allows us to get as much audience as we can. A film that is similar to this is ‘The Ring’ as the certificate for this film is a 15 but it is scary at various points in the film as it makes the audience jump and react with it, also contains violence and gore as blood is presented and a couple of killings.

Script

Lesson learnt’ Script

The scene begins with a close up of Douglas in his school yearbook.

The camera then zooms out to reveal the yearbook as a bigger picture.

The camera will then zoom in towards victim 1’s picture, to the point where there is an extreme close up on the eyes of the picture.

The shot cuts to the eyes of the victim, now zooming out to reveal his corpse.

The next shot flicks to the picture in the yearbook of the first victim being crossed out by Douglas, with a red marker.

The camera then uses a low angle shot of our Douglas’s feet waking away into his van travelling to a pub through some leaves.

The next shot is a mid/long shot showing the pub and its surroundings, with Douglas and Fuchsia walking out with him, she has blonde hair and is dressed innocently.

Douglas: Allow me to drive you home, my van is just round the back.

Following the previous shot, there will be a low angle shot of Douglas opening the back of his van and removing a black sack and carrying it towards his garage.

Once back in the garage, Douglas washes his blooded hands in the sink.

After the killer has washed his hands the camera then pans across to him crossing out Fuchsia’s face off the yearbook with the same red marker.

The camera will then zoom out to reveal all of the victims from the yearbook that have been murdered; the red marker is a symbol for all the blood that the killer has had to wash of his hands and symbolises the mass murders that he has committed.

We then cut to a TV showing a news report from outside Douglas’s old school.

Reporter 1: The police will continue their search to find links to the disappearances, if anybody has any information please contact the number at the bottom of the screen.

Whilst the final piece of dialogue is being said the camera will zoom out to reveal a TV. The camera will continue to zoom out to reveal an over the shoulder shot of Douglas watching the news report on the TV. The screen will then black out with the title ‘Lesson Learnt’ written in blood.

Gantt Chart Update

This is our second draft of the Gantt chart of deadlines that the kingsford production team has to meet, the gantt chart shows which member of the team has to do what. Each person has been given a colour and it correspondes with what they have to do and when. We have also give the whole group the colour purple and this shows when the work was done by the group as a whole. We are using the gantt chart to help plan our time and to meet all deadlines and so far it has been a really helpful guideline for us to follow.

Animatic Storyboard

This is the animatic storyboard that the group produced, we all had our own piece to do in the making of the storyboard. Each member of the KingsFord Production team had to talk about one line of it, also we took it in turns to film each part of the storyboard. India then edited the clips we filmed together to create the finished animatic storyboard. There was several reason why we created the animatic storyboard, the main one being: it gave us a chance to break the opening of our film down into sections, and to see how the clip will actually run when it is filmed. Also the storyboard helped us fine tune the ideas we had for our film and develop them into the actual opening to the horror film.

Questionnaire

Here is the questionnaire I made to help get an insite of our target audience our film is going to be aimed at. We asked 10 people to answer the questionnaire below to find out which gender prefers what type of horror film and which sub genre is the favourite between both male and female. Also, we decided to find out what other type of genres our audience likes to understand what type of person they are. Using the questionnaire overall allows us to know what to write for the next part of the project, Target Audience Profile.

Similar Media Works

For the kingfords production team to gain more knowledge of the horror genre, we put together a similiar media works powerpoint. We had to a lot of research into the horror genre in order to do this used books and other sources from the internet to get a wider range of information. The powerpoint took a lot of time and work for us to complete, so as a group we had to manage our time well. In order to do this we decided that we should divide the seperate slides of the powerpoint between us so that we could all be working on it at the same time.

We split the amount of work between each member of the group as evenly and fairly as we could, so that each member of the group was able to show what they have to contribute to the presentation. This is how we divided the work load between the group:

India Gothard: India completed two slides on evaluating four other films of the horror genre, these included: The Blair Witch Project, Saw II, Jeepers Creepers and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. She also did a slide on the target audiences of horror films and a fourth slide on the analyse of the opening scene of The Grudge.

Stephanie Hadlow: Steph completed a slide on the genre and sub-gere of our film. She also did a slide looking into the history of horror and how it has developed and changed over the last 60 years. Another slide that steph did was on the types of storylines that are used in horror films. The fourth slide that she did was the analyse of The Lost Boys opening scene.

James Garrod: James completed a slide on the common settings that are used throughtout the horror genre. He also completed a slide on the types of technical codes used in horror films, such as camera angles, lighting and transistions. James also did the analyse of the opening scene of Halloween.

Tom Le Gresley: Tom did a slide on the types of characters that appear in horror films and this included several examples. He also did a slide on the generic signifiers and symbols that are commonly associated with the horror genre. Tom also completed a slide on the analyse of the opening scene of Hannibal.

On our similar media works presentation we have cleary stated on the bottom right corner of the page who completed the slide, we did this so it is clear to see who has done what and it shows how the work has been divided between the group.

Film Brief

Film Brief

The purpose of our piece is to create the opening two minutes of a horror film. This gives us a chance to demonstrate how well we know the media terms, different camera angles, and horror conventions.
We chose the horror genre because it is very adaptable, and has lots of sub genres. Horror films can be used with limited resources and still have a wide range of affects on the audience. We can use many samples of horror conventions, such as blood, death and supernatural activity in order to create effective opening scene to our horror film.
The film is about a man who was bullied at school and is now getting revenge on the people who bullied him 15 years ago. The killer works in a garage and keeps a yearbook of his entire year group close to him. He pinpoints the people who made his school life difficult for him and decides to kill them all off. There is a news report that broadcasts the story of all these disappearances, but they are only linked by the fact they were all in the same year group at the same school. The killer sees the news report and we have a flashback to the days when he was bullied. The story then moves on to the police investigation behind all the disappearances. As the police feel they are getting closer to a prime suspect, more people are killed. The killer leaves a mark on each of his victims showing why he was bullied. The officer in charge of the case goes to the garage to interview the killer about the people who had disappeared. The officer discovers the yearbook of his year group at the school, as he was also a member of that school. He sees the pictures crossed out and finds that he has found the killer. In the end the officer returns to the garage to arrest the killer. As the officer enters, the killer is hanging in the garage dead with multiple wounds. The final shot is of a hand crossing off the killers’ picture on the yearbook.
In the opening of our film we begin with an establishing shot of the yearbook, we then zoom in on the killers’ picture on the yearbook. The camera then pans across the other classmates and zooms in on one particular picture. The camera then zooms in on the eyes of the picture, the shot then cuts straight to the person’s eyes as they are dead. The camera then slightly moves out to see the face of the victim. The shot then cuts back to the picture being crossed out by a red marker. Our protagonist then travels to a pub to meet a woman, we have a wide shot of the pair leaving the pub. We then cut back to the protagonists’ van pulling up at the garage and him taking out a black sack from the rear of the van. The shot then cuts to the woman’s picture being crossed out. We then have a news report outside the school expressing the disappearances of former students at the school. There then is an over the shoulder shot of our protagonist watching the news report as the camera gradually zooms in on the television. Our title will then appear on screen to end our opening of the film.
The purpose of the opening to our film is to get the audience involved with the movie straight away, and make them want to know who the killer is and what these people have done to him in order for them to be killed. We feel by using many horror conventions effectively in our opening scene will create a disturbing atmosphere within the audience in the opening two minutes. The techniques that we used and the methods of our filming have all been chosen in order to fixate are audience on the opening of our horror film. The opening of our horror film tells its own short story and that makes the audience want to watch the rest of the film.

For the opening of our horror film we are going to design a range of logos for the kingsford production team that will come up at the opening of the film, we also desging titles to come up during the opening of our horror, the titles will show the name of the film and the names of the characters this makes the film look all the more professional.
Our opening creates many questions for the audience, such as, why is he killing former classmates? What have these people done in order to be killed? And mainly what is going to happen if the protagonist is found out about his murderous activity?
In conclusion we will be taking into account all conventions of horror when creating our horror

opening.

Saw Remake

Horror Re-make

Our group decided to do a re-make of saw one’s opening scene, the famous 2004 horror directed by James Wan. We choose to do this film because it is good practice for when we create, shoot and director our own film. The opening scene of Saw 1 uses a wide range of camera angles and lightening techniques so it was a challenge to film and edit but it all helps to prepare us for the making of our own film.

We were given a variety of films to choose from in which to re-make, and we chose saw as we feel that it was the most similar to our own film, as they both have the sub genre gore. We are glad that we chose to do saw because we are now very familiar with the use of different shots and camera angles that are used in horrors and this knowledge can all be used to make our own film the best it can be.

Group initial idea's

As a group we have built up all of our individual idea’s and interlinked them together, for the past three lessons we have managed to combine all of our own idea’s ,and successfully managed to develop them as one big group idea. Developing our initial ideas has helped us as a group discuss and express how we feel we are progressing with the production of the film, we also started to discuss our ideas about our film as a whole, film names, production names, the narrative and the target audience.

We have used several different methods to show our initial ideas such as a bullet point narrative, story board and a mind map; all three of these methods have helped us in different ways to develop our final production. Planning a narrative was one of the very first things we did as a group, this is because we needed a narrative to create a story board to show the story line from beginning to end. We also each made a spider diagram and then shared ideas, to produce a basic outline of our final idea for the film. We thought about other horror films that could influence us and give us motivation for our filming. Our main film that we have chosen to influence us is ‘jeeper’s creepers’ this is because our sub title is going to be gore and we all felt that this film supports our sub genre well.

After gathering several thoughts together we knew that we had to get them all down on paper to then create a story board, we are now going to be creating a gant chart and focusing on our storyboard for the group so we know who was doing what including dates and times, to make sure this is fair. Also as a group we came up with several intial ideas for film names such as:
  • Lesson Learnt
  • Body Shop
  • Death Report
  • Flashback

We feel this names are all appropriate for our film as the all fit in with the story line well, as a group we have also been discussing team names and we came up with the name KingsFord productions as it means something to the entire group.
